Southern Oregon’s Williamson River is probably the best fishery in the Lower 48 for big native trout. Yes, that’s a bold claim. After all, beyond the Northwest, many anglers know nothing or little about the Williamson, and most certainly realize that to suggest this river is the best fishery for big native trout necessarily invites comparison to western rivers that are far better known.
But bear with me because the Williamson is different.
In fact, the Williamson is actually two distinct rivers: the Upper and Lower Williamsons are hydrologically connected but separated by vast Klamath Marsh. The Upper Williamson springs to life from a modest glen in the forested mountains 30 miles east-by-northeast from the tiny community of Chiloquin and then flows north to feed into Klamath Marsh. The lower Williamson emerges from the western side of the expansive marsh and flows southward, gathering Spring Creek and the Sprague River along the way.
Both rivers also flow through extensive private property, which limits access considerably. Luckily for anglers seeking an amazing big-trout vacation, the Upper Williamson enjoys the services of expansive Yamsi Ranch, and the Lower Williamson is home to Lonesome Duck Ranch. Both properties specialize in excellent accommodations, superb fly-fishing guides, and outstanding access to these two incredible fisheries. To fully appreciate and enjoy the Williamson River in both its iterations, you can do no better than to make a weeklong stay, spending half your time at Yamsi, and the other half at Lonesome Duck. Book as early in the year as possible: memorable fishing, affable and expert lodge personnel, and limited space to ensure exclusivity assures that Yamsi Ranch, and Lonesome Duck Ranch both fill up quickly each year. If you’re a little late and summer bookings are unavailable, don’t hesitate for the underappreciated autumn shoulder season when fishing is outstanding and scenic beauty reaches its apex.
